The Latest Issue of Sew News...

I was collecting magazines at my local Barnes & Noble for my long flight to Seattle later in the week. I came across the latest Sew News (Oct/Nov 2008). Now, I know I wasn't suppose to be skimming through this mag until I got on my flight, but I couldn't help it. Let me tell you, this mag has a lot of good sewing info.

First off, I came across this cool looking pillow picture on page 48. Now, that looks very, very familiar to me...the black and silver brocade fabric. Could it be? No, too much of a coincidence. But I had to go and check in my closet.

Sure enough, it's the same black and silver brocade fabric that I used for my Kwik Sew vest. Same fabric design, same colors. Wow. Just think, I purchased this brocade from Joann's earlier this year and now the fabric is being used in a Sew News article.

Oh yeah, back to the magazine. There are several interesting articles about silk fabrics, the different types, and some project ideas.

What caught my eye in this particular issue, was the section on How to Fitting - Pants. There's some pretty good line drawings about fitting issues and how to resolve them.

Also, there's a writeup on Fall fashion trends. I haven't even covered the rest of the magazine as I had to close it and hide it in my backpack. Okay, so I'm looking forward to my long flight.

I think this latest issue is worth a look.

Burda Easy Fashion Mag

I love surprises. Especially ones that come in the mail. I forgot that I ordered a subscription to the Burda Easy Fashion. My Winter issue came yesterday. They are only published twice a year. So, sometime next Spring/Summer...I'll have another surprise in my mailbox. I know I'll forget next year.

Looking at the magazine cover, you will see it's written in German. I know, I should have taken German for my language elective in high school. I never thought I would be sewing later in life, let alone know what Burda was. Yes, the whole magazine is in German. So, I can "read" pictures and diagrams and figure out the sewing process. Thank goodness the writing on the pattern pieces includes English as well as German and Russian.

I only made it to page 9 of this mag when I fell in love with this jacket. I love the neckline, the front pleats, and single button. Oh heck...I just love jackets with pleats. I have a few nubby fleece in my fabric stash that would work well with this pattern. I can see many creative possibilities.

Here's the line drawing for the jacket. Looks pretty simple, huh?

I have already "read" through the steps several times. I mean re-reading the diagrams and drawings. I am sure I'll "get it" after awhile. Thank goodness for my experience with using Kwik Sew, Vogue, and Butterick patterns. That will help fill in the gaps.

Vonnevo over at Pattern Review was the enabler. I saw a lovely jacket she made from a previous issue. I figured, why not get a subscription? If anything, I can drool over the pictures.

To my fellow sewers and sewing bloggers...if you can recommend a fabulous online/website translator...I would really appreciate it. It would give me a nice place to start.

Self Indulgence…Burda World of Fashion (BWOF)

After a few years of watching fellow sewers on PR whip up fantastic BWOF garments and outfits, I decided to take the plunge and order my first issue. I was anxiously awaiting my June issue when I received an email that the magazine was delayed another week. Okay, I have plenty of other things to do…like writing on my blog, organizing my room, etc. Finally, it arrived in this week’s mail from SewBaby.com. Poor DH didn’t see me for hours that evening as I was pouring over the magazine (pictures, drawings, and instructions) and understanding the layout of the patterns.

Will I try something from this June issue? You bet! After all, I have a lot of tracing paper to use. Now, I just need to figure out which garment to make.

I have to say I’m in awe of this magazine. I feel like I have reached a new sewing level and territory. I have ordered a 6-month subscription to BWOF.

I will definitely have a future post on BWOF…my findings and personal take on this magazine. First, I need to do a lot of absorbing.
