BWOF 12-2008-113...muslin #2 still WIP

I am inundated with so many non-sewing projects this week. It's not funny. I've been spending a lot of time on my Mac for the last 2 days. I have a church project that I'm working on that involves the 450+ pictures I took earlier this month. I guess I need to learn to take less pictures. I am also cleaning my rooms. DH has put up with my "piles of stuff" long enough. Whew!

I wanted to post my latest project. Still a WIP. Notice the neckline is raised higher than my first muslin. All I did was take in an inch at the top of the shoulders. I figured if I posted this for all to see, I would have to finish this within the next day (my goal). All I need to do is finish the neckline and hem the sleeves and the bottom.

I have a Stretch & Sew knit top already cut out and waiting for me to get it sewn before the end of this year. Yikes! I better get my rear in gear.

More Padding...

...that is on SusieQ, my dress form. That is what I was working on this afternoon. A work in progress. Still have to add more padding to the waistline and hips. I've been using polyester batting to fill in the areas under the bust.

When I pulled off the undergarments, I accidently turned one of the side knobs and thus one side of the bust was smaller. I couldn't turn the knob up and I can't find my instructions. The knob can go down easily, but not up. So, if any of you have a TwinFit dress form...how do I turn the small knob at the side of the bust up another size?

When I get back from vacation, I will retake my measurements and make the necessary adjustments on SusieQ. I hope to lose some weight after all the snorkeling.

My BWOF...Arrived Early

I received a really nice surprise in the mail this afternoon...January's BWOF. It arrived early. I had to take a break from my closet cleaning and peruse the colorful pages and diagrams. So far, only one garment caught my eye.

I do like this v-neck knit top with the gathered sleeves (#106B). I hope to try this pattern out and trace it within the next few days.

On the sewing action front, I finally got back to sewing my 2nd BWOF muslin (12-2008-113). This one is a bit more closer fitting than the first top I made. I took in the top sleeve seam by an inch. This essentially raised the neckline a bit. I tried on the top and I like the overall fit much better. All I need to do is put in the neck facing and hem the sleeves and bottom.

More Knitting Projects

I finally finished my 2nd pair of fingerless gloves. The first glove only took a day to finish and the matching second glove took over a week to complete. That's what I get for having too many hobbies. Good thing I forced coaxed myself to finish. I would have hated walking around with one glove on. For the cuff, I used Moda Dea 'Vision' in Princess color. I love the striping it created. For the body of the glove, I used Lion Brand 'Wool Ease Worsted Weight' in Dark Rose Heather. The two colors worked well together. I used size 9 knitting needles.

Here's a practice cable scarf. I actually finished this right before Christmas. I wanted to show off the edging of the scarf. Basically, I slipped the first stitch off (left needle to the right needle) at the beginning of each row and proceeded with the patterned stitches. Slipping the first stitch gives the edge a really clean finish. Also, I noticed the scarf didn't curl towards the wrong side. The scarf is actually not that red, but more rose color. I wanted to show the details of the scarf/stitches and ended up bouncing my flash.

Here's another cable scarf sample in the works. I'm using Lion Brand 'Wool Ease Thick & Quick' yarn in Wheat color and size 15 needles. For this scarf I'm reversing the cable. Try something different. Working with this thicker yarn is just wonderful. Makes the knitting go faster, but also the scarf has a nice body to it.

So far, I've managed to finish all my knitting projects that I started. I think I'm starting to prefer knitting over crochet. Now, I would not have made that comment a few months ago...when I was still trying to figure out the knit and purl stitches.

What Did I Get?

I was doing my daily blog reading and came across Ann's posting at Gorgeous Things. So, here I am listing what I received: Photoshop CS4 book, Contemporary Christian Easy Guitar book, music stand, really nice red/black/gray knit top, a fabulous/perfect red scarf, Joann's gift card, Best Buy gift card (perhaps Project Runway #4 DVD?), a purse, and of course a really cool Beagle ornament.

Thanks to Shannon's post over at Hungry Zombie Couture, I've been watching some really cute...Beagle Puppies here! They are the cutest and of course I'm biased because DH and I used to have a beagle. So to appease me, DH got me a beagle ornament (see pic above). I have to admit, I don't have to worry about shots or clean up. lol!

Right now, I should be cleaning my sewing room...what am I doing? Beagle puppy watching. They are just so doggone cute!

The Apron & Other Things

Well, I can finally post the VA Tech project that I made a few weeks back. Here's the apron I made for my DB#1 for Christmas. The fabric was perfect and unique. The pattern I used was my TNT apron pattern from Kwik Sew 3247. I love this apron as the straps are adjustable...single strap that goes around the neckline and then to the sides of the apron. The last I heard, DB#1 was looking for a place in his kitchen to proudly display his apron.

On the personal sewing front, my BWOF knit top has been bothering me in a nice way. I pin fitted my existing tunic I made. I think I have figured out a way to turn this tunic pattern into a more fitted top, which will result in a raised neckline. I am going to start by taking in the top shoulder area by an inch. Then I will work on the sides and probably take in an inch there as well. I have another knit fabric cut out and ready to sew tomorrow. I will let you know the results.

Merry Christmas!

It's Christmas Eve (afternoon) and I was trying to avoid venturing out today, but my guitar needed tuning. Traffic was a mess and it took me awhile to get into the parking lot. Anna at Music & Arts was kind enough to show me how to tune my guitar. Because the strings are so new, they will get out of tune for awhile. So, I will continue to pick and play and tune. I was grateful for learning something new today.

We're staying home for Christmas, warm and toasty in our house. It will be so nice to stay in our jammies and watch movies.

I have no sewing projects in the works. No new patterns traced out yet. Just a lot of yarn staring back at me.

For those of you who visit my blog, I wish you and your family and loved ones...

Another Vogue 2925...Semi-Formal knit top completed

Can you stand to see another knit top from Vogue? Since I was on a roll with this top, I decided to make another using a fancy slinky knit that reminds me of lace. It only took an hour to whip up this fancy schmancy top. I bought this at G-Street Fabrics over the summer and I had a "V-8" moment. I already had this exact fabric in my stash...thanks to EmmaOneSock. If I remember right, this was a Chico's knit.

I plan on wearing this top to a fancy gala next summer. This puts the pressure off of wondering what to make at the last minute. Now, all I need to do is make one more formal something and I have 7 more months to figure that one out.

I love how a plan comes halfway together.

Yarn Projects

This morning, I took a break from my sewing adventure and went "browsing" at my local mom & pop yarn shop. I browsed through their books and touched all their yarns.

While at the shop, I purchased two bamboo circular knitting needles to eventually make this mini cardigan. I found this Easy Little Cardigan over at Craft Stylish. They give a really nice tutorial along with pictures of some of the steps.

I went over to Lion Brand's site and came across the same Easy Cardigan instructions that you can download.

I am waiting for another Lion Brand Wool Ease Quick & Thick yarn sale to pick up the yarns I need for this cute project.

Update: I just realized where I saw this cute little cardigan. It was at Deepika's blog and here at the Pattern Review-knitting message board.

In the works:
I am still working on my 2nd pair of fingerless gloves that I'm knitting in rose color. It's slow going, because I have too many hobbies in the works this week. So, what do I do? I add another knitting project.

I am getting ready to start this Easy Cable Scarf I found at Craft Stylish. I have a rose/pink color yarn that would really show off the cable stitches. It does look like a quick project and I want to master the cable stitch or at least feel comfortable to knit it without the instructions staring me in the face.

Well, back to my sewing.

BWOF and Vogue on Me

Here is my BWOF knit tunic. I made the smallest size 38 which turned out to be quite big on me. I am wearing a black slinky knit tank top that I made last year underneath the tunic. I still have quite a bit of room.

I'm thinking of trimming off my seam allowances that I added to my pattern and giving this top another try. Maybe with a less stretchy knit fabric. What do you BWOF experts think?

Here I am modeling my new TNT V2925 in a size 12. The finished bust was about 34 inches. I am extremely happy with this size. Better fit and not snug at all like the size 10 version.

Both of of my latest sewing adventures are posted on PatternReview.com.

BWOF 12-2008-113...completed

Okay, I've completed my first BWOF garment. I have to say, it was a very rewarding experiment experience. This is the beginning of a new adventure for me.

Here is my knit tunic on SusieQ. I made a size 38. It is quite loose fitting on me. I can actually wear a fitted t-shirt underneath. Looking at the pictures (models) in the magazine, this tunic is meant to be worn over a shirt/garment. That explains the fit.

My neckline appears to be very low in comparison to the line drawing provided below. I'll have to double check the pattern I traced...maybe operator error.

Just as everyone has mentioned, the BWOF instructions are very skimpy. Dawn, thanks for leaving your BWOF comment/suggestion. I ended up following my sewing intuition. I had to read between the missing lines to figure out the sewing instructions and use my own sewing experience to come up with my own sewing steps.

I will back tomorrow to post a picture of me wearing the tunic. A PR will be posted soon after.

Another Vogue 2925...completed

Here's another wonderful version of Vogue 2925 knit top. This one is in a size 12. The fit is much better. Not as snug as the size 10. No alterations were needed. For the side seams I did sew a 3/8 inch seam allowance.

Does the fabric look familiar? I had made a long New Look knit skirt earlier this year and reviewed it on PR. I had enough fabric left over to make this top. I love the idea that I now have a matching two piece outfit.

Here are the pleats pinned at the shoulder. Instead of trying to mark the fabric with chalk or pencil, I use my pins to mark the pleat lines. Then I carefully fold over, matching the pins to create the pleat. I use a third pin to hold down the pleat until I baste it in place.

Here I am stitching the front shoulder seam. I also place a 1/4 inch twill tape in the stitching area. I find the twill tape does a great job stabilizing the seams.

I have serged the shoulder seam and made sure the serger has caught the twilll tape:

Here's a view of one of the shoulder seams completed. At this point I go ahead and serge the hem areas (neckline & armhole):

For the finished neckline, I turn over the neckline 3/8 inches (instead of 5/8 from pattern instructions) and pin. Notice the neckline is smooth:

Another TNT top is finished. I have a fantastic slinky knit that looks like lace that would be perfect for a dressy version.

I will be back later to post a picture of me wearing this new knit top and with the skirt I made this year.

What's Up for the Next Few Days? Sewing of Course!

It's Friday evening and I'm officially off from work for the next two weeks. I went to Hancock's and caught their Vogue sale. I was able to get the larger size pattern for V2925. So, on my cutting table is a size 12 version of the knit top.

I wanted to practice sew a few more knit tops before I tackle my first BWOF, the 12-2008-113 pleated knit top. My ability to sew with knits is still a bit messy right now. I should not have gone so long without sewing a knit-something over the last year. Shame on me. I was looking at my BWOF fabric pieces and realized I had a problem. Something didn't look right. I went back to the instructions and smacked my silly forehead. I had cut out the neckband wrong. Not on the fold and not along the width of the fabric. It's probably a good sign that I needed to cut out a contrast neckband instead...which was my original plan. I know, it looks like I'm procrastinating on my BWOF project. My goal is to get it started this weekend.

I also sewed up a knit top from New Look 6735. Bad news for me...it was a wadder. I know, this knit top pattern received rave reviews on PatternReview.com and it's in the running for "One of the Best Patterns for 2008" and I couldn't get my first attempt to come out right. I cut out a size 10 when I should have used a size 12. It didn't look good on me. I also used an inexpensive jersey fabric...something that screamed "what was I thinking" when I bought this fabric? So, I need to dive into my fabric stash and come up with a fabulous fabric to get me out of this New Look rut.

It's been hard for me to get back into sewing knit tops. I am trying to stay away from my TNT KwikSew and Stretch and Sew knit patterns and expanding my horizons with Vogue, New Look, and eventually BWOF. Here again, I feel the need for a challenge instead of going back to my "safe" patterns.

For the next few days, I will be in my sewing room. In sheer bliss and the hum of my sewing machine.

***********

I wanted to add, that I'm looking for a knitting/yarn bag pattern. Not a regular rectangle tote bag, but a cylinder bag that can hold a ball or skein of yarn. I am looking for a quick and easy pattern to make for myself and for some friends. Please let me know.

My New Knitted Ensemble

Here's my first knitted ensemble. Complete with scarf and fingerless gloves/wrist warmers. All the yarns used are Wool Ease from Lion Brand. The two colors I used was Black and Denim Twist. For the scarf, I used both the Black and Denim (two yarns) to make it heavier. You can see my gloves are not the same color pattern. As I mentioned in a previous post, I was running low on the Denim yarn so I ended up knitting the cuff in that color and then finishing with the Black yarn.

The gloves are wonderful and don't get in my way when I'm typing at my keyboard. My hands stay nice and warm.

I thought these two color combinations would make a nice looking sweater for a future project (when I advance my skills). I went to Michael's to catch their Wool Ease sale. The Black was sold out. The Denim Twist was no where to be found. No Denim Twist at Hancock's either.

Well, I'm off to dig around in my yarn stash to find a rose colored yarn to make another pair of gloves.

Vogue 2925...Knit Top

I know...it's about time I started posting something about my sewing. Well, I am having a very productive sewing day. First, I managed to cut the fabric for my BWOF 12-2008-113 knit top. It is in my sewing queue ready to be stitched up.

Here is what I am working on now:

This the infamous Vogue 2925 ensemble pattern. I made the knit top. Can I mention that it was super easy?

Here's my knit top on SusieQ. I love the pleats at the front shoulder areas. I traced and cut a size 10. I found that the top was a bit snug using the 5/8 inch seam allowances. So I ripped out the side seams and re-sewed with 1/4 inch seams. A much better fit.

I absolutely love the neckline shape. It covers my front chest area nicely. The front shoulder pleats were easy to sew. The only time consuming part was folding over the neckline area and armholes and topstitching.

I still have to hem the bottom and it should be done.

My only heartache with this pattern is the size range. I bought the (6-8-10) pattern size for the knit top. If I want to make something else from this pattern (e.g. jacket, skirt), I have to purchase another pattern in size (12-14-16). Actually, I would like to try this knit top in a size 12 and I believe the next Vogue sale is this week. On my next version, I am going to add bindings to the neckline and armholes. I think it would be a nicer finish. This looks like a TNT pattern for me.

Knitting Fingerless Gloves/Wrist Warmers

Today is my sewing day. I have several knit tops in the works. Hopefully, I can complete two of them.

Since I'm up early this morning, I wanted to post my latest knitting project.

Awhile back, I had posted about purchasing fingerless gloves at Walmart. My sewing friend, Clio, made a comment that I could easily find a fingerless glove knit/crochet pattern and make them myself. She was right. That thought stuck in my head for several weeks as I was getting back into my yarn hobby. I finally found this lovely knitting pattern over at Bernat's site.

So, here is my version (still a work in progress) of the fingerless glove. I modified this pattern by shortening the length. The overall glove length is about 13 inches. Way too long for me. My version is only 8 inches in length. Short and sweet. My ribbed cuff is knitted in black Lion Brand Wool Ease yarn for 2 inches. Next I did the stocking stitch (Lion Brand Wool Ease - Denim Twist) for about 3 inches and finished with the final 3 inches of ribbing.

That is one glove done. I am almost finished with the 2nd one. I am in the final ribbing phase. I ended up reversing the colors on this one as I was running out of the Denim Twist yarn. I had enough to make the cuff and switched to Black for the body and final ribbing. This was a great weekend project. I'm glad I was able to use up my leftover yarns from my scarf project.

I will post a picture later of my fingerless gloves and matching scarf set.

Clio...thank you for getting my creative juices going on this project.

A Saturday Christmas Play

As I mentioned in a prior post, I was tasked to take pictures for our Children's Christmas Program at our SDA church. From rehearsals to final production, I took over 450 pictures. Do you know how difficult it is to take pictures of youngsters? Always on the move, squirming, fidgeting, etc. As always, I enjoyed the picture taking experience immensely.

Here's a sample picture of some of the masks that were designed and used in the play. I see a french hen and a turtle dove mask.

The play was called "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and the kids were dressed to represent the 12 days of Christmas. There were many verses to be told and songs to be sung. They were all adorable.

As most of you know, I have to respect the parents' wishes and won't be posting pictures of the kids. Trust me, they were quite cute!

My Reflections on 2008

I was reading Lindsay's and Dawn's blog and enjoyed their post on their annual review of 2008. I thought I would do something similar and capture my goals and accomplishments for this year.

2008 Goals:

One of my goals for 2008 was to make at least 2 garments a month followed by their reviews. I mostly accomplished that for part of the year, but fell short by October when I came down with the nasty 6-week bug.

I do feel I can still accomplish that goal. I still have the rest of December to go with the last two weeks devoted to sewing. Yes, I will have to hold off taking my SM in for maintenance.

Another goal was to learn a new hobby. That was in the form of knitting.

And yet another goal was to share my sewing experiences via the Internet or through hands-on teaching.

My Accomplishments for 2008:

  • Started my own sewing blog
  • Became a sewing educator
  • Made a pair of pants and several pairs of shorts. Still have some fitting issues to address.
  • Bought my first BWOF subscription.
  • Received my 3rd star at PatternReview.com
  • Expanded my fabric, pattern, and notions stash by a lot
  • Featured on Lazy Girl Designs’ blog
  • Learned to knit and master the knit and purl stitches. Even took on the cable stitch.
  • Learned to take better pictures. Practice makes perfect. Took over 5,000 pictures this year.
  • Became a Mac user.

2009 Goals:

  • Sew more of my clothes and stop spending money on RTW.
  • Work on getting a good pair of pants to fit. This will help with the first goal.
  • Make a coat
  • Fine tune a hobby. Learn to play an instrument really well.
  • Sew a guitar case (well, I could try)
  • Sew down my fabric stash and limit new fabric purchases.
  • Knit and crochet more to reduce my yarn stash...so I can buy more yarn.

I am sure I will be adding more to my 2009 goals list because I am constantly thinking of more fun things to learn and do.

Conquering the Cable...

...as in the cable stitch. Here's my sample. I was getting bored with just doing the knit and purl stitches. I picked my handy dandy Boye's I Taught Myself to Knit Pocket Guide and followed their instructions to do a test sample. My first attempted resulted in producing 4 additional stitches out of nowhere. I pulled my first sample apart. My second attempt turned out to my liking. With this knowledge, I plan on making a cable scarf. I've done some research and have found that some cable scarves tend to curl badly.

I think I'm going to use my sample reference and create my own cabled scarf pattern. I'll be back to post my results.

For those of you who are interested to know how I learned to knit...here's a picture of the pocket guide I am using. It's actually a kit that I purchased from Walmart at the beginning of this year. The Boye kit included this pocket guide plus a set of short size 8 needles. This booklet has taught me the basics of knitting with simple instructions with pretty good diagrams.

Another Hobby...Am I Crazy?

Besides sewing, knitting, and photography...I have added another hobby to my ever growing list of things I enjoy doing. I am teaching myself how to play a classical guitar. So far, I have learned to play Jingle Bells and Love Me Tender. I am actually reading & playing the music notes.

Okay, so how did this start?

The classical guitar has been in my family for at least 35 years. One of my DBs originally brought it. I remember when I was in my pre-teens, I picked it up and played a few notes (not knowing what they were). I picked up my DB's Alfred's Beginning Guitar book and learned a few notes. I ended up learning to play first few notes of Dueling Banjos and Scarborough Fair. Did I just age myself? That was the end of my young guitar playing career.

Now, here I am with the guitar in my possession. It has moved with me through the years and left in many basements. I made contact with the guitar when the hot water heater broke late last year & we had a tiny flood. I scooped it up before water could damage it. This guitar had developed broken strings over the years (from aging) and remained that way until last month. My DB#2 replaced the strings for me.

Okay, so how did I learn to read music?

A few years ago, DB#2 told me that since I type really, really fast...I should be able to play the piano/keyboard. I know it sounded ridiculous! But hey, what the heck...both of my DBs know how to play electric guitar and I was the only one without any music talent or instrument. So, I picked up a Yamaha keyboard (really good deal). I taught myself to read music and learned the keys on my Yamaha. I started out with Christmas songs...you never forget those famous tunes that stay in your head forever. I ended up playing tunes from The Sound of Music using both hands on the keyboard.   It was a long struggle and a huge milestone.

Relearning how to read music didn't take me long. I'm just struggling with learning where to place my fingers on the strings of my old/new guitar.

Naturally, I'm now thinking about sewing a guitar case to protect my dear old friend.  See, it didn't take me long to figure out a way to get my sewing hobby mixed in with my music hobby.

Tracing & Cutting & Baking Day

While the bright sunlight was blazing in my sewing room, I spent most of today tracing and cutting out patterns. Of course, my BWOF 12-2008-113 took the longest time. Being my first BWOF attempt, I had to make sure I added the seam allowances to the pattern pieces I traced. I also figured out the roadmap to the pattern sheets. That will have to wait for a separate post on my first BWOF experience. Stay tuned.

I zipped through tracing and cutting out New Look 6735. Another knit top in the works.

In between tracing and cutting, I also spent time backing up all my photos and data onto two separate external drives. I've been taking about 500 photos a month...that's been the average. This coming week, I've been tasked to take some pictures at our church...rehearsals for the Christmas program. This should be fun.

Now, it's time to bake some cookies. I think the last time I baked cookies was over 15 years ago. I used to make wonderful desserts (e.g. cream puffs, cakes, pies, etc) and baking with chocolate was my specialty. I just hope I am not too rusty to bake oatmeal cookies.

** Update **

Well, my oatmeal & raisin cookies came out pretty good and I didn't burn them. I should have left them in the oven for another minute to get a bit more browner. But they are yummy and chewy. I used parchment paper on the cookie sheet before placing the dough on the sheet. I got the recipe from America's Test Kitchen site.

I was a little apprehensive to use their recipe as the directions included: using two cookie sheets with one sheet placed on the lower rack (oven) and the other sheet placed on the middle rack. Bake for 22-25 minutes. About half-way through the baking process, swap the sheets on the two different racks and then turn the cookie sheets halfway. Basically, the lower sheet moves up to the middle rack and the middle sheet moves down to the lower rack. Then take the cookie sheets and turn so that the back cookies are now in the front. You know what? It really worked. All the cookies were evenly baked. I won't doubt any of their recipes again. I do love watching their shows on PBS.

Diving into BWOF and Other Things

Looks like I'll be sewing something from BWOF. I have been looking over the last 7 issues I have (new subscriber) to find a simple top to make. I have decided on 12-2008-113.

Naturally, after seeing the pattern sheets I feel a real challenge to tackle my first BWOF pattern. For those of you who never laid eyes on a BWOF mag, here is one of the pattern sheets from my 11-2008 mag.

On the knitting front: I have finished the two previous posted scarves and now working on another two. I like making two at a time. If I get bored with one color, I can switch to the other scarf. This one will be for a child. I am using Vanna's Choice yarn from Lion Brand. This will be a simple garter stitched scarf.

This one is for me. I am using two yarns, one in black and the other in denim twist color. Wool Ease by Lion Brand. I love the effect so far.

I feel another productive weekend coming on. My Christmas shopping is done...no need to be in the stores or on the Internet.

I might even bake some oatmeal cookies...yum, yum.

Simply Knitting for the Month

I am doing a little side project. Since I am almost done making gifts for Christmas, I thought I would start making gifts for our local SERVE. SERVE provides assistance for families in need as well as a place to get hot meals and a temporary place to stay. My side project involves knitting scarves in different colors and different sizes to give to the families during Christmas. I am not sure how many will get done, but I feel the calling to do something special for them. I will be posting throughout the month, the scarves I knit.

The yarn I am using for this colorful scarf is Homespun by Lion Brand in Tudor color. I am using knitting needles size 11 (8.0mm). I have cast on 14 stitches, knitted (garter stitch) 10 inches, knit a row/purl a row (stockinette stitch) for 25 inches, and finish with 10 inches in the garter stitch. I just have a few more inches to knit and it should be done this evening.

I am also working on this scarf in Wool-Ease by Lion Brand in Wheat color. This is a great yarn to knit with. For this scarf, I am using knitting needles size 15 (10.0mm).

I love the design of this scarf pattern. I personally do not like having anything bulky around my neck. The stockinette stitches in the middle of the scarf results in the scarf curling towards the center...making the scarf narrow. I love it. I might have to make one for myself.

I am getting a lot of practice with the knit and purl stitches. I was a bit nervous in knitting with the light color yarn, but so far my stitches are looking pretty even.
